January 30, 2017 was the 100th day of school for PCSD #1 students.  The second grade teachers and students at Libbey challenged all of the students at Libbeyand West to bring 100 items per grade for the local food bank.  Each grade level was assigned a specific item.  Members of the WHS Student Council and the WHS Rush Dance Team picked up all of the donated goods after school Monday and then delivered them to the food bank.  The food drive was a huge success!  Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers, students, and families that donated.

5th Grade Gets Exercise in Government on Election Day

5th grade students at West Elementary were visited by our two State Legislators on Tuesday, November 8.  State Representative Dan Kirkbride and State Senator Brian Boner led the students through an exercise in government where students were separated into committees to decide what types of legislation should be passed on several types of transportation vehicles including bicycles, skateboards, and motorcycles. In their committees, students were to decide which vehicles needed driver’s licenses, should protective gear such as helmets and pads be required, which vehicles should not be allowed on roadways, which ones should be allowed to operate at night, and which should have a minimum age requirement.

Following the exercise, several students commented on how much difference of opinion there existed even in their own grade. Students learned that the next step for lawmakers was to take those differences of opinion and craft laws that would govern everyone. Legislators Boner and Kirkbride also explained to the students the three branches of government, their current elected positions and committees they currently sit on. The 5th grade usually visits the Capitol building, but with renovation being done, were not able to do so this year.  We thank both legislators for taking the time to meet with our students.
