Libbey Students Celebrate Reading Month

Libbey Elementary has many exciting things happening with reading throughout the month of February! February has begun with a new book for I Love Reading Month! Every family received “Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday”, by Judith Viorst, to be read together as a family. The students are invited to complete 3 activities throughout February to bring to school to share.  At the end of the month, all students will be rewarded for their participation in this great reading activity! Also taking place during February--community guest readers, the annual Book Fair, and Bingo for Books.  Bingo for Books is always a great event where the prize is… a free book!

Here are some great ideas for getting your children on track with a school routine:
Set a regular bedtime to allow your child to get plenty of rest for a new day of learning at school. Research shows that children who get at least 10 hours of sleep each night, do better in school.

  • Communicate with your child the importance of being in school everyday and learning to read.
  • Praise your child for their efforts and accomplishments in school. Sometimes learning to read can be a tough job so praise the small steps too! When children feel good about what they are doing, they are likely to do it more!
  • Encourage your child to communicate daily about what they are learning. The more you interact with your child the better they develop basic language skills.
  • Read to your child, let your child read to you, and let your child see you reading. Share what you are learning when you read the paper or other material to help your child see there is a purpose to reading for everyone.
