August, 2024 – Josh Sandlian

Engaging students in their learning is an important component to their success. Wheatland HS and Peak HS are committed to providing students opportunities that promote growth and understanding to help them prepare for postsecondary options including college, careers, or enlisting in the military.

This summer, WHS transformed spaces to allow students to engage their learning at a higher level. The first project is the weight room. Over the course of the summer, the weight room was gutted and rebuilt with a new heating and cooling system as well as an update with weight equipment. The new ventilation system will provide appropriate filtration and temperature controls to maximize student performance. The new weight equipment was designed to “show off” our Bulldog spirit! This remodel will provide students and staff an environment to focus on their physical and mental health through physical activity.

The second area that will be seeing an upgrade is the Agriculture welding shop. Through a Demonstration grant in the amount of $125,000 written by Mr. Bill Dalles, students will soon have access to new welders. This upgrade will allow students to work with up to date equipment perfecting their skills and preparing them to be successful in the welding trade. The new welders are multi process welders that allow students to weld using Arc, MIG, and TIG configurations. Whether students go on to a postsecondary trade school or go straight to work, our students will be prepared through the use of updated equipment and welding curriculum.

A third area WHS has focused on is providing more opportunities to learn trade skills. Mr. Hazen applied for a Demonstration grant in the amount of $89,000 to incorporate a Z-Space lab in his classroom. This opportunity is a 3D designed digital curriculum that will allow students to work through modules in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other skills. Our goal is to continue to add programs of study under the Perkins program to help students prepare for postsecondary plans. Check out this video to discover what an amazing opportunity this is for our students!

Peak HS is embarking on a journey into the Discovery Program. Four staff members including Mrs. Ciz, Mrs. Leathers, Mr. Buchhammer, and Mr. Sandlian attended a week long training to be able to deliver the curriculum. Mrs. Ciz and Mrs. Leathers will be instructing PHS students during first period throughout the fall semester. The Discovery Program is designed to help students develop life skills such as communication skills, working in effective groups, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Students will need these skills through high school, but also as they prepare for life after high school.
