At WHS, teachers have the flexibility to gather student learning opportunities in multiple ways. This year, Platte #1 has joined Governor Gordon’s RIDE initiative to create and expand opportunities for students to demonstrate learning. The RIDE initiative this semester is focusing on WHS teachers in CTE, Math, and Science expanding knowledge in student designed assessment opportunities and expanding work experiences in the community.
One of the teachers involved in the RIDE is Mrs. Cindy Amundson. Mrs. Amundson has restructured her classroom to allow students to take on more responsibility in their learning process. Each of Mrs. Amundson’s classes have learning outlines that describe the work for students to earn an A, B, or C in class. In addition to the outline, students also meet one on one with Mrs. Amundson to determine individual student learning goals. Students are not left alone in their learning. Mrs. Amundson still provides notes and information related to each unit topic. Along with this information, Mrs. Amundson provides students an opportunity to show their learning through engaging and interactive projects. One example of this style of project is the “Graveyard of Medical Information”. This activity is designed to allow students the opportunity to research medical information, an old wive’s tale, or a medical myth they’ve heard before. Students then demonstrated their learning by creating and describing their information on a headstone.
WHS continues to promote student learning opportunities through various avenues. We encourage students to think creatively and critically with the goal being that they are able to work independently and in team settings as they prepare for life after high school.
