In conjunction with their study of Wyoming history, West 4th grade students presented their Hoedown for the public on May 15th. This has been a tradition at West for many, many years. In addition to singing Western songs, students performed a line dance called "Cotton Eye Joe. " America's rich history of social activities in rural areas of the 18th and 19th centuries helped develop a tradition of square dancing. The 4th graders learned to square dance with a partner and follow calls with the music. Each square dance was followed by a fabulous swing dance. Of course the program wouldn't be complete without the students singing "Git Along Little Dogies", complete with three whip crackers dazzling the audience! The program concluded with a poem called "Cowboy's Prayer."
